Grant Initiatives

In Alleghany County Schools, three major types of grants are defined:

  • Entitlement grants are ones that ACS is entitled to receive from the state or federal government based upon a formula by which funds are distributed to all eligible school systems that properly complete an application for the grant.

  • Competitive grants are ones that ACS competes with other school systems or organizational entities. Awards are based upon the interest of the funding agency and the merits of the applicant's proposal, and not all eligible applicants will receive a grant.

  • Collaborative grants are ones that ACS enters into collaboration with one or more other organizational entities, and an agency other than WCPSS is the fiscal agent responsible for managing the grant.

Golden Leaf Community Assistance Initiative Awards Alleghany Schools $1.2 Million!

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Cox received word on August 9 that Alleghany Schools will be the recipient of $1.2 million from funds included in the Golden Leaf Community Assistance Initiative currently being awarded to Alleghany County projects.

In an email announcement to all Alleghany Schools employees Dr. Cox noted "I don't have to tell you what a huge boost this is going to be for our school system and the students we serve." He continued by thanking everyone involved for their various roles played in helping develop a strong proposal for the grant as well as ensuring the successful implementation of the current $325,000 Golden Leaf STEM grant.

Dr. Cox's announcement also indicated that one of the reasons Alleghany Schools was granted the initiative is due to the success of the current model classrooms and how well teachers are implementing advanced science and math curriculums throughout the district. More information about what the grant will provide for our school system will be forthcoming.
