Mission Statement The Alleghany County School System will provide educational opportunities which prepare all students to reach their full potential in life. Law Day The NC Bar Association’s observance of Law Day 2014 is
scheduled for May 2, 2014 in Raleigh North Carolina. Established by President Eisenhower, the day
recognizes our nation’s dedication to the ideals of equality and justice under
the law. Every year the NC Barr Association holds a poster contest for students in grades 3-5 to demonstrate their understanding of the law. This year the contest theme was “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters”. The first, second, and third place winners, along with their parents, have been invited to Raleigh on May 2 to be recognized for their achievements and receive rewards at the 2014 Law Day Festivities. Two students from Alleghany County were selected as the first and second prize winners! Ashlin Williams took first place and will receive $300 along with a plaque of recognition, and Abigail Toliver won second place and will receive $150 along with a plaque of recognition. Congratulations Ashlin and Abigail! | Some of our wrestlers have been hard at work over the past couple of weeks. Please see the letter from Coach Linker below to learn the impressive accomplishments of these talented guys. “Jake Blevins and Britt Weaver, along with some rising 9th graders, have been working out since the end of the high school wrestling season with the Alleghany Wrestling Club. These young men have compiled an impressive list of accolades over the past several weeks. Their first official competition came at West Lincoln High School five weeks ago in a freestyle only competition where Britt took first place and Jake took second. The name of the tournament was the Top Dawg Challenge, and this was impressive finish for our guys considering they only had two practice sessions before the competition. Two weeks after the tournament at West Lincoln these two competed at another freestyle/greco tournament at Northwest Cabarrus called the Trojan Clash. Both Britt and Jake took second in Greco and first in freestyle; however, these tournaments were just tune-ups for the competitions to come later. Two weeks ago Britt and Jake traveled to Chapel Hill High School to compete in the 37th Annual Tar Heel State Classic. This tournament was special in that it was a qualifier for the North Carolina National Team. Britt took first in both styles, while Jake took first in Greco and third in freestyle. Their placing at this tournament assures both wrestlers of spots on the NC National Team, and affords them the opportunity to compete at the Freestyle National Championship in Fargo, ND, as well as the Cadet Duals in Orlando, FL. This means that Jake and Britt have become the first national team members from AHS in nearly a decade. Britt and Jake will both be competing at the Freestyle State Tournament in Mooresville as well as the East Coast Duals qualifying tournament at Voyager Academy in Durham in the upcoming weeks. Their finishes at these two tournaments will solidify their spots on the NC National Team, qualify them for further national level competition at the East Coast Duals in Baltimore, MD this summer, and provide invaluable experience for their future high school seasons.” |
